The Chief Executive of the National Aquatic Centre says the Aquazone facility will remain closed until they are satisfied everything is in order at the pool.

He got into difficulty while playing in the paddling pool at around 6:30pm yesterday.

He was rushed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown where he was pronounced dead last night.

Gardai are investigating and Mr. O’Brien says they are cooperating fully.

“We’ll conduct our own full investigation in the fullness of time” he said.

“At this moment in time though it’s all about dealing with the Gardai and answering all their queries”.

“We have actually closed down the Aquazone…for public access until further notice until we’re absolutely satisfied that everything is in order”.

“So that’s where we leave it at this stage; but once again the concentration is on assisting the Gardai with all of their inquiries” he added.

A 27-year-old Dublin man has been convicted of murdering a man who was shot 10 times in the passenger seat of a car.

Jonathan Douglas from O’Devany Gardens has been sentenced to life imprison for gunning down Aidan Byrne at Drumalee Avenue off the North Circular Road on February 20th 2010.

The jury heard Mr. Douglas was drinking in the pub on a Saturday evening when a man offered him money to carry out a hit.

He left half a drink behind to lie in wait for 31-year-old Aidan Byrne who was driven to Drumalee Avenue in a Toyota Corolla before 9pm that night.

He shot him 10 times before running from the scene to the house of his step-niece Stacey Douglas who lived nearby.

She told Gardaí Jonathan Douglas admitted the killing while at her house.

Her boyfriend Andrew Sheridan said Douglas also known as ‘Yuca’ showed him the gun before leaving.

Both Stacey and Andrew later retracted their statements claiming they were afraid and had told Gardaí what they wanted to hear.

On their second day of deliberations the jury convicted the 27-year-old of murder.

He has been sentenced to life in prison.

Opposition fighters are making a bid for the biggest Syrian city of Aleppo.

They have already managed to maintain control of Azaz which is a key border town.

But they have been forced to retreat from suburbs in Damascus where it is claimed government troops executed at least 20 unarmed men who were accused of aiding rebels.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague says he remains disappointed and appalled that Russia and China vetoed the UN resolution.

“I think that events over the weekend – including the escalating death toll, the spreading of the violence to other parts of Syria – show how necessary that resolution was and how tragic it is that it was not passed at the Security Council” he said.

Bereavement practitioners have come together to create a support network for children who have lost a loved one.

The Irish Childhood Bereavement Network will act as a hub for psychologists, doctors, counsellors and teachers among others to help them meet the specific needs of children who are dealing with death.

It is estimated around 3,500 children in Ireland have lost one or both their parents.

At the moment there are no specific services to help them.

Dr. Susan Delaney is the Bereavement Services Manager with the Irish Hospice Foundation which is hosting the network.

She says children have needs that are particular to them.

“Not every child that’s bereaved for example will need counselling – a small percentage will” she said.

“For many children, the people who will support them in their bereavement will be their teachers and  their parents; and we want to make sure there’s good accurate information out there that will support that natural network” she added.

Eurostat figures show Spain has the highest at 51.4% with Germany last at just over 8%.
