A man in his 30s has been arrested after the death of eight-year-old Malika Noor Al Katib. 

Malika was assaulted on Sunday and passed away in the early hours of Monday morning after she was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

The man, who was recently released from hospital, was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern region of the country.

Investigations into the incident, which occurred at a New Ross residence on Sunday, are still ongoing.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information to come forward.
