A man (42) is in a critical condition after he was assaulted in Dublin city centre. It happened on Montague Place near Pearse Street between 6:50pm and 8:30pm yesterday evening.

The man suffered serious head injuries. He was taken by ambulance to St. James's Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

Pearse Street gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
