A Mayo man alleging garda brutality at a Shell to Sea protest has denied attempting to push a garda over the parapet of a bridge.

Patrick O'Donnell, along with his brother Martin from Porturlin, Ballina and a third man Patrick Coyle from Barnatra in Ballina, claim they were assaulted at Bellanaboy Bridge on January 19th, 2007.

Fisherman Patrick O'Donnell claims Garda Peter Lee gave him 3 or 4 fast punches to the face during a protest outside the Shell oil refinery 8 years ago.

He told the jury it happened when he went to the assistance of his friend who had been struck by a garda.

Under cross examination it was put to him that Garda Peter Lee was attempting to rescue his son Garda Marvin Lee because protesters including Mr O'Donnell were attempting to force him over the parapet of the bridge.

The witness replied to barrister Colm Smyth 'I absolutely didn't touch them'.

The court has been shown garda video footage of the Shell to Sea protest outside the company's oil refinery, over eight years ago.

Mr O'Donnell is looking into the camera on a dark January morning saying 'See my face. Look at it bursted. Two holding and one belting. What sort of men have you got down here?'.

Asked about laughter on the tape he said that would be Greg Burke, the local garda operating the camera.

Mr O'Donnell's evidence is that he had been assaulted about five minutes before the footage was shot while trying to help a friend who was on the ground after being punched by gardaí.

An Garda Síochana deny the allegations.

The jury heard this is not the only claim of assault Mr O'Donnell has brought against gardai arising from the Corrib gas protests.

The case continues tomorrow.
