A man in his 50s has been arrested after a serious assault in Mullingar, County Westmeath. 

He was arrested on Monday afternoon and is being held in a Midlands Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. 

On Sunday, a man was taken to Regional Hospital Mullingar after an assault in the town. 

He has since been transferred to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital and is in a critical condition. 

Gardaí have asked for any witnesses with video footage of Mullingar's Patrick’s Street between 1 and 2am on Sunday to get in touch
