A taxi driver aged in his 70s has received serious facial injuries after his car was hijacked in Cork. The man was attacked by two passengers on the Carrigohane Road at 1:30am this morning.

The injured driver was beaten, left on the side of the road and his car was stolen.

The driver picked up the two men at Dillons Cross. While heading in the direction of Cork city, the driver was threatened and then assaulted.

The two men took the driver out of the car and drove off. The driver was taken to Cork University Hospital and released a short time later.

The stolen taxi was pursued by another taxi and later crashed in Blarney.

One man aged in his 30s was arrested and is being detained at Gurranbraher garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. Another fled the scene.
