Gardaí say they're following a definite line of inquiry following the fatal stabbing of a grandfather in Dublin.

Michael Gannon (55) was babysitting his two grandchildren at their home in Skerries - when he was attacked yesterday.

A man (29) who was arrested nearby shortly after the incident is still being questioned by gardaí.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out today to determine the exact cause of Michael Gannon's death.

Mr. Gannon, from Finglas in North Dublin - was minding his two grandchildren at his daughter's home in Mourne Park in Skerries in North County Dublin - when he was attacked and stabbed to death.

The incident happened at around 6 O'clock yesterday evening.

It is understood that while the children were in the house they did not witness the attack.

Shortly afterwards a man (29) - who had locked himself in a nearby house for a time - was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He was taken to Ballymun Garda Station - where he is still being questioned.

A knife has also been recovered and is due to undergo forensic tests.

It is understood gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
