A man has been arrested in connection with the discovery of synthetic drugs.
The 25-year-old was detained by Revenue Customs officers and members of the Garda National Drugs Unit in Sligo. He was found in possession of 1.5 kilos of 4-Mec (Methylethcathinone) yesterday evening.
4-Mec is a chemical that resemblance mephedrone, which is a stimulant drug. The drugs are believed to have originated in China and are worth an estimated €52,000.
Gardai believe the headshop drug was destined by Northern Ireland and the PSNI are now helping with the investigation. The investigation and inquiries are on-going.
The man was detained at Sligo Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act.
This was the second seizure of this type of drug by the Revenue Customs Service within the last week.
