Gardaí are currently searching for the weapon used to kill a woman who died in County Cavan over the weekend. 

On Saturday night, Gardaí were called out to a rural property close to Ballyconnell where they found the body of a woman in her 50s. 

She was pronounced dead at the scene and a seriously injured man in his 60s was taken to hospital for medical treatment. 

The couple have since been named as Annie and Henk Heyneman. 

On Newstalk Breakfast, Irish Mirror crime correspondent Mick O’Toole said a man in his 30s has been arrested for questioning. 

“At about 9.40pm on Saturday evening, a man who would have been known to Mr and Mrs Heyneman went to the local chip shop,” he said. 

“He effectively raised the alarm; he was injured himself and he asked the owner to contact Gardaí and ambulance personnel.

“Gardaí went to two locations - they went to the chipper, where they arrested the man. 

“They also went to Mr and Mrs Heyneman’s house in Kilnavert - which is a few kilometres outside Ballyconnell.”

When they arrived at the property, Gardaí also found that a fire had broken out at the property. 

“Fire authorities attended and put that fire out very quickly,” Mr O’Toole said. 

“That house is now a murder scene and a man, who’d be known to Mr and Mrs Heyneman, is currently in custody in Cavan Garda Station.” 

Investigation

The Heynemans' home has been sealed off ahead of an inspection by the Garda Technical Bureau.

“They’re effectively looking for the weapon or weapons that were used in the stabbing,” Mr O’Toole said. 

“Mr and Mrs Heyneman were both stabbed, so they obviously have to find that weapon and searches are underway for it.” 

Gardaí have asked for anyone who was travelling in the Kilnavert area on Saturday night to contact them. 

They are especially keen to talk to anyone with dash cam footage.
