A man has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery in Dublin.

At approximately 6.55pm yesterday, a masked man entered a shop on Military Road in Kilmainham armed with a suspected firearm and demanded money.

Two plainclothes Gardaí happened to be in the shop at the time and intervened.

The Gardaí were assisted by a member of the public.

After a struggle, the man was disarmed and restrained before being formally arrested.

The man, aged in his 40s, is being held at a Garda Station in Dublin while the suspected replica weapon was seized and sent for a ballistic examination.

Both Gardaí were unharmed and are being provided with the necessary welfare supports following the incident.
