A man has been arrested after a number of shots were fired at gardaí in Cork overnight.
Gardaí responded to reports of an incident at Military Road in the city.
When they arrived, a man fired a number of shots in their direction before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
A chase followed, involving members of the Armed Support Unit.
Shortly after midnight, gardaí used a stinger device at the toll plaza on the M8 Northbound to bring the suspect's vehicle to a halt.
The suspect - aged in his early 20s - left the vehicle and fired shots at gardaí.
Officers then used a tazer to detain the suspect, who is now being held at Fermoy Garda Station.
Nobody was injured during the incidents, and the Garda Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has been notified.
Gardaí say the M8 Motorway remains closed in both directions between Junctions 15 and 17 this morning, to allow for a technical examination to be carried out, with diversions in place.
A scene is also being examined at Military Road.
