A man who beat his father to death in the home they shared in Dublin has been jailed for seven years.
Mark Tims of Rowlagh Green in Clondalkin claimed he just "lost it" after his father insulted him when he joked about him burning their breakfast.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt said Mark Tims’ father Anthony should be enjoying his retirement, but instead he was cruelly deprived of the opportunity, due to the actions of his then 47-year old son in the heat of a drunken row in July 2018.
The court heard Mark lashed out after his father told him he was a “waster” and claimed he wished he had never been born.
Both had been drinking separately on the day in question.
Mark drank cans at home, while his father went for pints to celebrate his 74th birthday.
The row started following a comment by Mark, who mocked his father for cremating their breakfast that morning.
Mark Tims beat him across the head with a mug, and continued to attack him while he lay defenceless on the kitchen floor.
He then gathered some belongings and went drinking with a friend.
Following his arrest, he claimed he’d been provoked, and just “lost it”.
He offered a plea to manslaughter, but was tried for murder.
A jury found him not guilty of the murder charge, but guilty of manslaughter and he was jailed for seven years today.
