A man has been charged in connection with the vandalism of the Luke Kelly statue in Dublin City Centre.
The marble statue on Guild Street was sprayed with blue spray paint yesterday evening – the seventh time it has vandalised since it was unveiled in January 2019.
The latest incident comes less than a both statues of the Dubliner in the capital were vandalised on the same night.
In a statement, Gardaí investigating the latest attack said they had arrested and charged a man in his 40s.
He is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice tomorrow morning.
On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, a spokesman for the Northwall Community Association said “absolutely nothing” has been done to protect the Guild Street statue since it was first attacked.
Mark Fay said locals are fed up with the situation.
"The reaction is anger,” he said. “It's frustration. At the same time... it's not unexpected. This has now been flagged and well publicised."
He said authorities should act to protect the statue in its current location - either through a protective railing or by raising the statue's plinth.
