A man in the US state of Florida has been charged with decapitating his mother, because she kept nagging him about chores, police say.

Christian Jose-Gomez (23) allegedly used an axe in the garage of the family home in Oldsmar on new year's eve.

Pinellas County Sheriff Lieutenant Elizabeth Brady said Gomez admitted dumping the head of Maria Suarez-Cassagne (48) in a bin outside the home.

Her body was found outside the property near bins by the suspect's brother, who called police.

He told police his brother had left the house, and they set up a perimeter in the area to look for him.

Another caller phoned police with information of a suspicious person riding a bicycle in the area.

Deputies saw him and tried to stop him. A brief foot chase followed and he was taken into custody.

Lt Brady said Gomez had been planning the murder because he was angry at his mother badgering him to put boxes in the attic.

Police say that during interviews with the detectives, Gomez admitted to the murder. The murder weapon - an axe - has been recovered.

He has been charged with 1st degree murder and is currently in the Pinellas County Jail.
