A 41-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after being assaulted in Galway last night.

The man received serious head injuries in the incident. It happened at Cullairbaun Estate in Athenry at around 11.30pm.

He was taken to University Hospital Galway where his condition is described as critical.

The Gardai are appealing for any persons who were in this area between 11pm and 12 midnight last night to contact the Gardai at Galway Garda Station on 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station with any information they may have.
