A man has died after an assault in a housing estate in Tallaght in southwest Dublin.

It happened in the Drumcairn Estate in the early hours of this morning.

The man was rushed from the scene to Tallaght Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A 35-year-old man was arrested and is being held at a Garda station in Dublin.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was in the Drumcairn Estate between 3am and 4am this morning and may have camera footage.

Gardaí are now trying to establish a motive for the attack and neighbours have said they are shocked by the incident, in what is a normally quiet estate.

One woman told Newstalk she was "devastated" by the news.

"A young man's life has been taken," she said.

"It's a quite road, everyone knows everyone. They watch out for each other, all the neighbours so that's why it's more of a shock."

Another man described the crime scene as a "terrible thing to see" and he was saddened a "young life [has been] wasted".
