A man has died after his car veered into a lake on Inishbiggle Island, Achill, Co Mayo, at 8pm last night. 

Gardaí said the car veered off the road and entered a lake. 

The driver of the car, a man in his 60s, was recovered from the car and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. 

The body of the man has been removed from the scene to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem is expected to take place. 

The scene of the collision is preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators
