A man who was seriously injured in an assault at Mountjoy Prison last week has died.
34-year-old Robert O'Connor from Darndale in Dublin was seriously assaulted in his cell on Friday evening.
He sustained serious head injuries after he was attacked by a group of other prisoners.
He was taken to the Mater Hospital, where he spent the weekend in intensive care. His death was announced this morning.
The Irish Prison service has offered its deepest sympathies to the man’s family and friends.

Gardaí have since launched a murder investigation and have received the preliminary results of a post-mortem examination.
A technical examination of the cell has been carried out and an incident room has been established at Mountjoy Garda Station.
The Inspector of Prisons is also investigating.
