Two people have drowned in Cork. One was aged 21 while the other was 17-year-old. They lost their lives after getting into difficulty swimming at separate locations in the county yesterday evening.

A number of people were arrested by Gardai for public order offences in the aftermath of one of the tragedies.

In the first incident the 17-year-old got into difficulty while swimming in the River Blackwater at Knocknagree at teatime. He was taken to Kerry General Hospital by air ambulance but he died this morning.

Emergency services responded to a separate call about a 21-year-old swimmer getting into difficulty at Iniscarra late last night.

The man was amongst a group of eight who had gone swimming after midnight. He was taken from the water an hour after the incident but was pronounced dead in hospital.

Two men were arrested at the scene and three others at Cork University Hospital for public order offences.
