A young man has died and a woman and child have been seriously injured in a crash in County Roscommon.

The two-vehicle crash happened on R280 at Arigna at around 8.20pm last night.

A man in his 20s who was driving one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman in her 50s and a young boy were rushed to Sligo University Hospital where they are being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The road remains closed this morning as Gardaí carry out a forensic examination of the crash site.

Diversions are in place.

Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to road users who were travelling in the area between 8pm and 8.3opm and may have camera footage.
