The crash, involving a car and a 4x4 vehicle, occurred shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, near Lisnagry, on the N7, Limerick to Dublin road.

A man in his late 70s, who was travelling in the car with another elderly man, died in hospital last night, after he sustained serious injuries in the collision.

The man who was travelling with the deceased, is in a critical condition at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

The driver of the 4x4 was treated in hospital for minor injuries and shock.

The road was closed for a time yesterday but has since reopened.

Gardai at Henry Street in Limerick City are investigating, and have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 061 - 212 400.
