A man has died after a mine collapse in Co. Tipperary. The owners of Lisheen Mine have issued a statement saying the collapse happened yesterday afternoon at the site near Thurles.
Lisheen Mine says the driver of a loader was found by mine rescue services trapped in his vehicle underneath a rockfall shortly after 4:45pm.
The company says it was a localised incident and no other person was involved.
Mine closed during investigation
The victim was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene a short while later. Emergency services are currently working to safely move the body to the surface.
The management and staff of the mine have extended their sympathy to the family and to his colleagues.
An investigation into the incident has been launched and the mine will be closed until further notice.
The company has said it will not comment further "until the investigation into the incident has fully established the facts".
