A man has died after getting into difficulty diving off the northwest coast of Donegal.

It's understood the man, aged in his 50s, got into difficulty around 30km off Tory Island yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services responded and the man was removed from the water by the Malin Head Coast Guard.

He was taken onboard the Coast Guard lifeboat before being airlifted to Letterkenny University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have been notified of the incident and a file is now being prepared for the Coroner’s Court.
