A man has died following a collision in Co. Monaghan. The single vehicle incident happened near Smithboro earlier this morning.

The man is believed to be in his early 20s.

He was critically injured when the car he was driving hit a tree at the town land of Aghnamallagh at around 9:30am.

He was taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment but died some hours later.

The road between Clones and Monaghan remains closed this afternoon as gardai carry out an investigation.
