A man has died after a car crash in County Longford.

Gardaí said the man in his 30s was seriously injured when his car left the road and struck a ditch near the village of Moyne at around 2am.

It is understood he was travelling towards Arva in County Cavan from the direction of Drumlish.

He was treated at the scene and taken to Cavan General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was the only person in the car at the time of the crash.

The stretch of road at the crash site has been closed while Gardaí carry out a forensic investigation.

Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward.
