A man has been charged following the death of an elderly woman in Cork.

An 80-year-old woman was assaulted at a residential property in Carrigaline on Sunday.

Gardaí said she did not initially require medical assistance but later became unwell.

On Tuesday she was taken to Cork University Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

On the same day, Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s and he has since been charged.

He is due to appear before Cork District Court this morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
