Gardai are treating the death of a man in the city as suspicious.

He underwent emergency surgery for a head injury but died early this morning.

A post-mortem was carried out this morning but gardai are not releasing the findings for operational reasons.

However they have now confirmed they are treating his death as suspicious and believe he was involved in an altercation shortly before he was found.

They have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the altercation at the St. Patrick's Bridge end of St. Patrick's Quay to contact gardai at Mayfield garda station.
