A man has been hit by a garda car in Limerick City.

It is understood he was walking across Upper Mallow Street when he was struck by an unmarked garda car.

He is being treated at University Hospital Limerick for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The Office of the Garda Ombudsman was contacted but has confirmed it is not investigating the matter.

Gardai at Henry Street are appealing for witnesses.
