A post mortem is due to get underway following the death of a man who was repeatedly stabbed in north inner-city Dublin.
The man (45) died in hospital earlier today after he was attacked outside a chipper on North Strand Road last night.
The motive for the attack is unclear but it is believed a row broke out between the victim and another man inside a chip shop near the Five Lamps sometime between 10:15pm and 10:45pm.
It is understood his attacker then armed himself with a knife and stabbed the victim repeatedly on both sides of his body. The man was rushed to the Mater Hospital, where he lost his fight for life this morning.
The fast food restaurant on North Strand Road was closed to allow for a technical examination.
Bloodied handprints can be seen on bonnet of a car where the man was stabbed
A small area outside was also cordoned off, and a blood splattered car was partially covered ahead of the arrival of the garda forensics team.
CCTV evidence could play a significant role in the investigation and whatever footage is available from inside the chipper and the surrounding area will be harvested by investigating officers.
A full murder inquiry is likely to be formally launched once the results of a post mortem are made available to gardaí.
In the meantime anyone with information is asked to come forward.
