A man is in critical condition in hospital following an incident in Westport, Co Mayo, early this morning. 

Gardaí said two men were involved in an “altercation” on High Street in Westport at approximately 1.20am today. 

One man, aged in his 60s, was taken to Mayo University Hospital, where he is in critical condition. 

A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested at the scene of the incident and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in the Northwestern Region. 

The scene is currently preserved for a forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. 

Investigations are ongoing.
