A man has died in hospital after falling ill while in Garda custody in Co. Cork.

The man had been detained in Midleton town at around 6:30am this morning.

He later became ill at the local Garda station and paramedics were called to the scene.

The man is believed to be in his mid-40s and was transferred to Cork University Hospital.

However he died there some time around 9am this morning.

Officials from the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission are investigating the case.
