Gardaí in Co Mayo are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 70s was knocked down and killed this morning.

The incident happened on the N17 at Claremorris at 7:30am.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the car was not injured.

The road has been closed to allow for a forensic investigation and diversions are in place.

Anyone who was in the area at the time is being asked to contact gardaí.
