A man remains in a serious condition in hospital this morning following an assault in Co. Offaly.

The man, who is in his 50s, sustained serious head injuries during an attack which occurred on the Main street in Birr at around 3 O'clock on Monday afternoon.

He was air-lifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where his condition is described as serious.

A man (17) was arrested in connection with the incident - he's being held at Birr garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
