class="MsoNormal">A 34-year-old Co. Wicklow man has been jailed for 11 years for killing the baby of his fiancée.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">Philip Doyle of Tinakilly, Aughrim in Co. Wicklow was convicted by a jury of the manslaughter of Ross Murphy at Creagh Demesne, Gorey in Co. Wexford on April 5th 2005.

class="MsoNormal">Mr. Justice Patrick McCarthy called this a rare and serious case of assault manslaughter where extensive violence was inflicted on a helpless and completely innocent child.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">Mr. Doyle was alone in the house with 3-and-a-half month old Ross when he inflicted multiple and fatal injuries on the infant which the post mortem found were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">The 34-year-old has apologised for his subsequent lies to everybody including emergency medical staff that nothing untoward had happened.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">3 weeks later in a garda interview he changed his story and claimed he had tripped and fallen while holding Ross.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">The judge said even now Philip Doyle does not accept the true state of affairs and his apology must be regarded as of little or no worth.
class="MsoNormal">
class="MsoNormal">He has jailed him for 11 years.
