A 46-year-old man has been jailed for 12 years for raping and inflicting what a judge described as "sadistic and humiliating violence" on his wife.
The man, who cannot be named to protect her identity, was also found guilty of coercive control.
The court heard the couple met online while he was living in Ireland and she was in Brazil.
They only met in person for the first time a week before they were married.
She got pregnant soon afterwards – something which came as a surprise to her because he had led her to believe they would not be able to conceive naturally.
The jury heard harrowing details of how he started drinking heavily and used to beat her, often to the point where she thought he was going to kill her.
The jury heard distressing details of the violence he inflicted on her, including a vicious attack when she was pregnant with one of their four children.
On another occasion, he raped her after beating her with a phone charger.
Despite being found guilty on charges of rape, aggravated sexual assault, assault causing harm and coercive control, the man continues to deny any wrongdoing and has shown no remorse.
He even suggested some serious injuries to her vagina were carried out by her.
In her victim impact statement, the woman said her dreams transformed into a nightmare during her marriage to the man and she spoke of how her fear of him kept her trapped in a circle of physical and psychological abuse.
He was jailed for 12 years today.
