A man has been jailed for 28 years by a British court for master-minding a plot to smuggle more than 1.5 tonnes of cocaine through Irish waters.
The drugs were found after the yacht carrying the drugs was intercepted around 150 nautical miles off Mizen Head in November 2008.
He was arrested after a boat was found carrying the drugs collected in Venezuelan waters heading for Liverpool.
The cocaine was found packed into the yacht “Dances with Waves”.
3 men caught on board each received 10-year jail terms.
However Gardaí from Bantry were part of an international investigation into who was behind the smuggling attempt – eventually leading to John Brook.
Officers from Cork including assistant commissioner Tony Quilter gave evidence during Mr. Brook’s trial in Birmingham.
He has been jailed for 28 years.
Matt Horne is from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) in Britain.
He says Brooks is a significant person.
