A 32-year-old man has been jailed for 6 years for killing a Lithuanian father-of-one in his Tipperary home after arriving uninvited at the victim’s Christmas celebrations.
Egidijus Kiaulakis of Coille Bheithe in Nenagh stabbed Gintaras Brazauskas 7 times in the early hours of St. Stephen's Day 2008. He was cleared of murder by a jury at the Central Criminal Court last March but was convicted of manslaughter.
Mr. Justice Paul Carney also imposed a 4-year sentence on the father of one for an assault on the victim's lifelong friend from Lithuania Robertas Sujetovas.
During the trial the court heard Gintaras Brazauskas celebrated Christmas at his flat in Nenagh with family and friends. In the early hours of St. Stephen's Day Mr. Kiaulakis turned up with a bottle of brandy and was let in even though he was not a friend of the group.
20 minutes later he was asked to leave by Gintaras's partner because the noise was upsetting their baby. There was a row as he left with another man who struck a bottle over his head.
At a friend's house, Mr. Kiaulakis armed himself with a knife and returned to the flat.
Gintaras Brazauskas got out of bed to answer the door. In the fights that broke out he received 7 stab wounds, 2 of which were fatal.
