A 23-year-old man has been jailed for seven years for killing a young father-of-one in Co Clare.
Robbie Walsh of Island View, Kilrush, Co. Clare stabbed Karl Haugh in the back during a fight in Kilkee in 2017.
Walsh didn't bring the knife to the Marian estate in Kilkee on August 6th 2017, but admitted picking one up and stabbing Mr Haugh while they grappled.
The knife was brought from the home of a friend of Mr Haugh’s.
During his murder trial, the jury heard he immediately admitted what he did when gardaí came to his home.
He also expressed his remorse for what happened but insisted he didn't mean to kill him.
His plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter wasn't accepted by the DPP and he was tried for murder, but a jury cleared him of the more serious offence.
The judge said his attitude was relevant when considering his sentence.
However, she said she also had to take into account his previous convictions for producing a knife and a hatchet in separate incidents.
She said she had a ten year sentence in mind, but arrived at an eight year sentence in the end with the final year suspended.
