A man has been jailed for two years for assaulting an LGBT+ activist, Izzy Kamikaze, during an anti-lockdown rally outside Leinster House last year.

Michael Quinn, of Malone Flats, Market Street, Ardee, Co Louth, admitted hitting her in the head with a large plank of wood, which had a tricolour attached to it.

Earlier that day, Ms Kamikaze - whose real name is Ruth O’Rourke - took part in a demonstration to show her support to frontline healthcare workers.

Speaking outside court this afternoon, the activist said she was indifferent to the sentence handed down but was glad that he admitted what he did.

She said: "I had no agenda regarding the man being sentenced - I didn't come here gunning for a custodial sentence.

"At the same time, I think when somebody swings a weapon at another person's head, it's only good fortune if that person stands up again."
