A man has been knocked down and killed by a stolen car in a hit-and-run in County Dublin.

Gardaí say the man in his 40s was out walking when he was struck by a car on the Coast Road in Baldoyle in the early hours of this morning.

The man was fatally injured in the collision and the driver of the car failed to remain at the scene.

The car involved in the crash had been reported stolen yesterday.

A marked Garda car was pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash after observing it in the area shortly beforehand and attempting to get it to engage.

Gardaí are now investigating the timeline of the incident, which has now been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

The road has been closed throughout the day while Gardaí carry out forensic investigations of the crash site.

It is due to reopen shortly.

Gardaí are now urging any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to road users who were in the area at the time and may have camera footage.

The local coroner has been notified of the man’s death and a post-mortem is due to be carried out.
