An elderly man has been seriously injured after shots were fired through the window of a house in Longford Town last night.

It happened shortly before 8pm in the Springlawn Housing Estate.

It is understood several shots were fired through the window of the house.

The man, aged in his 70s, was taken to Mullingar Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The area remains sealed off this morning, with a technical examination of the scene underway.

The Garda investigation is ongoing.
