A man has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Athlone Town.

It happened on North Gate Street shortly after midnight in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man in his 60s was out walking when he was hit by a car that failed to remain at the scene.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where he continues to receive treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

They are particularly interested in talking to anyone who was on North Gate Street between midnight and 12.45am on Sunday morning and may have camera footage.

The Garda investigation is ongoing.
