A man has been shot dead in Co. Laois.

The victim was aged in his 20s.

He was wounded in the incident in the Kilnacourt Woods Housing Estate in Portarlington at about 8:30am this morning.

He was taken to Tullamore General Hospital.

However he was later pronounced dead.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

The office of the State Pathologist has also been notified.
