A murder investigation is underway after a man (48) was shot dead as he cycled to work in north Dublin this morning.

The victim has been named as John O'Regan, a window cleaner who was shot by a lone gunman on Gateway Avenue in Ballymun at 8:45am his morning.

He was married with one son and lived in the area. Garda say he had travelled the same road on a daily basis "for many, many years".

Mr. O'Regan had a number of minor convictions in the 1980s, but nothing of consequence since then. He was rushed to the Mater Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

A post mortem is to be carried out this evening.

Gardai say the attack happened near the Ballymun Road at a busy time of day and they are asking witnesses to come forward.

Superintendent Paul Moran from Ballymun garda station has this appeal.
