One dedicated pet owner went beyond the call of duty when he spent £300 (€385) on life-saving surgery for his goldfish.
ITV News reports that the man noticed the fish, which he keeps in a tank in his office, was unable to remove waste, and so took him to the Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in Norfolk.
When told the cost of the operation, he initially declined, but minutes later changed his mind.
During the 50 minute procedure, the fish was put under anaesthetic and a lump was removed from close to his anus and dorsal fin.
Vet Faye Bethell said that goldfish surgery was a first for her:
"I have never done a procedure like that on a goldfish, although I have done it before on more valuable fish like a carp."
