A man who broke into a woman’s home and raped her while she slept has been jailed for nine years.
24-year-old Kamal Kumar Nepali of Beech Park, Ballincollig, Co Cork was described in court as “predatory” in nature.
He was found guilty following a trial of one count of rape, one count of burglary, one count of assault causing harm, one count of sexual assault and four counts of trespass on March 1st, 2022.
The court heard today that the survivor had been out socialising with friends and was in a deep sleep when he broke into her home.
She awoke the following morning to find him in her bed. The jury was told she was covered in love bites and injuries consistent with being raped.
The woman told Mr Justice McGrath that the “confusion, fear and upset” from that morning will never leave her.
According to Gardaí, Nepali had broken into four other houses that night looking for vulnerable, intoxicated women.
He was found guilty just before Christmas.
Nepali refused to accept the guilty verdict and before he was sentenced, the judge noted his lack of remorse or empathy and absence of an apology.
Mr Justice McGrath also said Nepali “is also a young man whose reputation and standing in the community is likely to be diminished, albeit of his own making”.
He also ordered that there be no contact between Nepali and his victim for an indefinite period going forward.
