It hardly comes as a surprise that Ireland figures quite highly when it comes to the cost of anything. Thus the fact that Ireland is one of the most expensive countries in the EU for making phonecalls won't raise many eyebrows.
At 10.2 cents per minute Ireland is ranked ninth within in the EU, which is 1.1 above the EU average according to figures published by the European Commission.
The cheapest domestic mobile calls is Lithuania (1.9c per minute) while the dearest is Netherlands (14.7) and there is a 774 per cent difference between both countries.
European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes was quoted as saying: "As these numbers clearly show, the 28 national telecoms markets in Europe today are not benefitting consumers like a single market would. It is critical for the whole EU to move quickly to build a real single market to achieve a truly connected continent."
