A key witness in Ian Bailey's action for damages over claims he was wrongfully arrested for the murder of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier will continue giving evidence today.

Shopkeeper Marie Farrell yesterday told the High Court she believed gardai when they told her they knew the former journalist was responsible for the 1996 killing in West Cork.

Marie Farrell said detectives told her in January 1997 they knew Ian Bailey had killed Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

However they were concerned he'd kill again and they needed her to say that the man she saw stumbling down the road on the morning of the murder was the former journalist.

She said at Ballydehob garda station in February 1997 she was asked to sign up to 8 blank pages with garda assuring her that they would take care of the rest.

She told the court she believed the guards when they told her Ian Bailey was strange and had once sat in a rocking chair on Barleycove beach with ten lesbians dancing around him.

She is still being questioned by Ian Bailey's lawyers and has yet to be cross examined by barristers acting for the State which denies allegations that gardai conspired to concoct evidence against the 57 year old.
