Mattress Mick has said his social media post urging customers not to try and pay with cash stashed in their bras made headlines in Canada and India.
The bedroom furniture supplier made the plea while temperatures soared in Ireland last week.
He posted a picture a sign in his Coolock store reading: “No bra money.”
“Due to increasing temperatures and for our own personal safety, we will not be accepting any bra money. Sorry for any inconvenience.”
On Lunchtime Live this afternoon he said he decided to bring in the new rules after a woman pulled cash out of her bra while paying at the till last week.
“As normal, we would ask are you paying cash or card,” he said.
“She says I am paying by cash and what she did then was she put her hand inside her blouse and took out a wad of cash.
“This took us all by surprise because we had never actually seen this happen before and the salesman didn’t know what to say or do.
“Anyway, we took her money obviously but we then had a little chat about it and said we would put it out there that this has actually happened, wondering if it had happened to anybody else.
“It turns out it has happened in other stores and in banks and in other various types of retail outlets – that’s the feedback I’ve been getting anyway.”
He said the post has made headlines around the world.
“We put it out there and it has received quite a lot of attention,” he said. “It was reported in the newspapers in India and it was on Canadian radio stations – which is no use to me because I can’t sell mattresses to India and Canada.
'No Bra Money'
He said he wanted to get the message out in a light-hearted way.
“There has been some favourable and some not so favourable comments about it but that’s life,” he said.
“Some comments were, I would take money no matter where it came from. Other people said you’re right, it is a little bit unhygienic, it is not right, it is not normal.
“But overall, the consensus is that what we did was seen as kind of, I won’t say a joke but it was a bit guerrilla marketing. It was something different and it got people talking over the weekend.”
