A mother and son living in Ballinrobe, County Mayo, have died in a road crash in Pakistan. 

55-year-old Noreen Shafiq and her 18-year-old son Umar died after their car was hit by a bus on Thursday. 

It happened in the Faisalabad district of the province of Punjab.

The mother and son died instantly in the crash, according to Pakistani news reports.

Ms Shafiq's husband Shafique and two other family members were in the car at the time and have been hospitalised for treatment of their injuries. 

The Shafiq family were visiting Tariqabad and were travelling to Gojra in their car when the incident happened. 

Ballinrobe Town FC, where Umar was a member, said it is “absolutely heartbroken for the entire Shafiq family”. 

It said Umar was a “lovely young gentleman who always had a positive outlook on things”. 

“We will miss our great friend who was always so enthusiastic, upbeat and an absolute pleasure to be around. Umar, we will never forget you.” 

The Shafiq family has lived in Ballinrobe for 15 years.
